Sony Catalyst Browse and Catalyst Prepare Update Released

Sony recently released an update to its Sony Catalyst Browse and Catalyst Prepare update. Catalyst Browse version is free of charge and allows you to browse and manage XAVC S and XAVC HS video clips shot with a Sony camera. Catalyst Prepare is not free, but it allows you to convert, copy, and prepare all your Sony footage before you start editing your footage. Let&#;s take a closer look at these updates!

Sony Catalyst Browse &#; New Features

Sony Catalyst Browse is a free Windows/Mac software that lets you browse files from your Sony camera/deck/card reader. This tool allows you to view all your clips, edit metadata, and even apply a global color correction/LUTs to your footage. Once you&#;re done, you can select your clips and copy them to a local hard drive/NAS.

However, I guess that one of the most used feature on Catalyst Browse is the image-stabilization feature. Indeed, the software can use Gyro data recorded by cameras such as the FX6/FX9, Sony a7S III, a7C, RX0 II, RX VII and ZV-1 to accurately stabilize your footage in post.

The latest Sony Catalyst Browse version includes several changes, such as:

  • Added support for XAVC S (AVC) / XAVC HS (HEVC) media.
  • When a clip has Flag metadata (formerly labeled Status in the Inspector pane), an OK, NG (no good), or Keep indicator is displayed in Browse mode.
  • Added support for clip rotation metadata in clip thumbnails and preview.
  • Added support for displaying image orientation metadata on the File tab in the Inspector pane.
  • You can now filter your clips in the Media Browser by file type, file format, date created, or flag metadata.
  • Added support for reading and previewing XAVC S clips with 48kHz, bit, 4-channel audio.
  • It&#;s now possible to stabilize XAVC, XAVC S, and XAVC HS clips using metadata.
  • Added support for writing, renaming, and deleting clips in the XDROOT folder for SxS and USB storage via FTP on the PZW
  • Added support for creating non-realtime (NRT) metadata for discontinuous timecode and essence marks when Catalyst creates new non-real-time metadata during MXF clip copy operations.
  • Support for connecting to FTP devices using fully qualified domain names.
  • Added support for reading long-integer ISO sensitivity and Exposure index metadata.
  • Added support for macOS (Catalina).
  • Improved processing time for clip stabilization when rendering on an NVIDIA GPU.

Sony also fixed dozens of bugs, for more information and download your free copy, please visit Sony&#;s website here.

Catalyst Prepare Update

Sony also worked on Catalyst Prepare update. If you&#;re new to Catalyst Prepare, it is basically a much more advanced version of Catalyst Browse. For a complete comparison list between Browse and Prepare, you can look at this chart.

Catalyst Prepare includes numerous changes &#; including all the changes that were made to Catalyst Browse &#; but also additional features such as:

  • Added new Use SR Live metadata and Adjust SR Live settings manually controls in Application Settings to read SR Live settings from clip metadata and use clip settings or manual adjustments to convert between standard- and high-dynamic-range content.
  • Added support for displaying SR Live metadata on the File tab in the Inspector pane.
  • Catalyst Prepare now support for fast device-to-device copying between Sony and non-Sony FTP devices.

Sony Catalyst Prepare is a free software update, but the software itself is not free. Indeed, it is a subscription-based software that retails for $ per month or $ annually. For more information, please visit Sony&#;s website here.

What do you think about these software updates? Do you often use Catalyst Browse or Catalyst Prepare to work on your Sony footage? Don&#;t hesitate to let us know in the comments below!

catalyst 5

We recently gave you a glimpse of Sony’s new Catalyst Browse at IBC and now the product is available for download.

Catalyst Browse is a free, clip-management tool specifically designed for Sony camcorders and decks such as CineAlta, SR, XDCAM and NXCAM series, this includes cameras like the new FS7.  Versions are available in both Windows and Mac OSX. Sony always prided themselves on good end-to-end solutions from capture to delivery, but in recent years the software has been poorly designed and not very user friendly. There were just too many ingest and viewing applications &#; XDCAM viewer, Content Browser, SR viewer and Sony RAW viewer all did similar things but for different codecs. The new Catalyst Browse and Catalyst Prepare are supposed to streamline and replace all those products.

catalyst 6

Catalyst Prepare is not available yet and is supposed to compliment Catalyst Browse with the addition of image enhancements, backup and metadata options. Prepare will also allow you to assemble a rough cut. Catalyst Browse is free but Sony will charge $ for Catalyst Prepare when it ships.

I think Sony will have a tough sell trying to charge customers $ for Catalyst Prepare &#; a piece of software that is primarily designed to make their products fit into a regular workflow. After all, if Blackmagic can give you Davinci Resolve for free then how can Sony charge $ for something less fully specified? Customers who paid a lot of money for Sony cameras are likely expecting free software at this point.

Anyway let’s have a look at what you do get for free. Catalyst Browser offers the following:

• Browse — Quickly browse the files on your device using a thumbnail view or detailed list.
• View — See the details of each clip, check focus, mark in and out points, adjust colors, and edit metadata.
• Fast Copy — Copy all clips on the media, a subset, or only the desired portion of a clip to save time and space.
• Ultra Wide Color Gamut — Review with confidence the full range of color captured by your S-Log and RAW Sony cameras. Apply color looks, and import/export standard ASC-CDL files with other workflow tools to save time.
• Clip Lists — Create, import, and export Sony Professional Disc clip lists for quick play-out needs.
• Transcode and Cloud Upload — Transcode clips to the most popular video production formats. Upload clips directly to the Sony Ci media cloud for collaborative team review.
• OpenCL GPU accelerated video engine for smooth playback and fast rendering
• Precise color engine featuring ultra wide color gamut and large dynamic range capabilities for previewing and adjusting S-Log, S-Log2, S-Log-3, RAW, and Rec source footage
• Comprehensive format support for all the Sony Professional cameras.

I downloaded the software and have found it far easier to use than the muddled and complicated interface of Content Browser, which it replaces. It also replaces SR Viewer which was an equally horrible piece of software. Catalyst Browse provides a much more user friendly interface but I did have the program crash on me on several occasions without warning.

Previewing clips is easy in Catalyst Browse

One of the great new features is the ability to easily copy your material or transcode formats like XAVC to more popular codecs such as Apple ProRes. There is however no way of transcoding to anything higher than 2K resolution into ProRes.

Transcoding to Apple ProRes is a welcome option

You can also transcode to MP4 variants for uploading to the web or to put directly onto a iPad etc. &#; possibly useful for rapid sending of rushes in news situations. There is also the ability to transcode into variants of XAVC or DPX files.

Basic adjustments can be made in the software

Built into the program is also the ability to do basic colour correction and have split screen views etc. You can view the material in an ultra wide colour gamut, but because this gamut pretty much exceeds all displays out there, what you actually see is always going to limited by the monitor you are using. You can apply basic colour correction and then import/export standard ASC-CDL files to use later on.

Camera metadata is easily viewed

There are various other features including the ability to view the material at any size as well as view with an anamorphic squeeze and horizontal or vertical flip. You can also listen to and pan up to 4 channels of audio &#; another good feature.

Catalyst Browse looks like a good step in the right direction for Sony. Hopefully it will make the process of reviewing, browsing, copying and transcoding your material just a little bit easier.

Catalyst Browse - Pre-production media organizer
Sony has a good number of professional-grade video editing tools to offer. However, before you start editing anything, you should make sure your materials are properly organized. This is what Catalyst Browse can help you with. Its purpose is to streamline media management, by providing you with a set of straightforward and easy to master controls, all in a friendly and familiar environment.

The software is free and it works on all modern Windows platforms. Its setup package is more than MB large, so it may take some time to complete the downloading process, especially with a slower Internet connection. However, the installation process is faster and it doesn't involve any complex configurations.

The user interface slightly resembles Windows Explorer, in terms of layout. You can navigate through your local folders with the aid of a navigation pane, located on the left side, and you can view their contents in the larger area on the right. What's more, the software provides detailed information about selected files, an embedded player and other tools, on the far right part of the interface.

Catalyst Browse is dedicated to video files, which is why you will only find this kind of files while browsing through your folders. Furthermore, you can switch from browsing mode to viewing mode, which reveals a larger number of special tools for your videos, including a waveform, a histogram and a vectorscope. Besides playing your videos faster or slower, forwards or in reverse, you can also make various visual adjustments.

If you prepare your videos for editing with Catalyst Browse, you will be able to work in a comfortable and convenient manner.

Pros:
The software provides a wide range of lightweight video editing tools. It has a familiar layout, so it is quite easy to get used to its controls.

Cons:
There are no obvious drawbacks to mention.

&#; catalyst browse free useful for rapid sending of rushes in catalyst browse free situations.

There are various other features including the ability catalyst browse free view the material at any size as well as view with an anamorphic squeeze and horizontal or vertical flip. You can also listen to and pan up to 4 channels of audio &#; another good feature.

Catalyst Browse looks like a good step in the right direction for Sony. Hopefully it will make the process of reviewing, browsing, copying and transcoding your material just a little bit easier.
